HIV, Aging and Rehabilitation Focus at CAHR 2017
Posted on: 2017-06-29

CIHRRC was pleased to collaborate with the Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) and Realize (formerly the Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation) on two HIV and rehabilitation endeavours at the 26th Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research in Montreal, Quebec, in April 2017.

    • Self-Management Interventions in HIV Rehabilitation – Addressing Research Priorities in HIV, Aging and Rehabilitation (Ancillary Meeting – Thursday April 6, 2017).

CIHRRC in collaboration with CAHRRealize and the Living with HIV (LHIV) Team hosted a One-Day Participatory Working Meeting with the aim to translate knowledge and advance an intervention-based research agenda focused on self-management (SM) in the context of HIV, aging and rehabilitation.

The meeting was attended by 32 clinicians, researchers, community members, people living with HIV, and trainees from Canada, Ireland and the United States with expertise in HIV, aging, rehabilitation and chronic disease self-management research.

Speakers included Claire Liddy (University of Ottawa), Cliona Ni Cheallaigh (Mercer’s Institute for Successful Aging, Trinity College Dublin) and Richard Harding (King’s College London), who spoke about:

    • The meaning of successful aging in the context of HIV and rehabilitation;
    • Chronic disease self-management (See presentation slides here: SM-Meeting-SLIDE-DECK-April-5-17); and
    • Rehabilitation dimensions in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS) for HIV & self-management strategies.
    • Advancing HIV, Aging and Rehabilitation: Where Does Rehabilitation Fit in the HIV Care Cascade? (Plenary Session – Friday April 7th, 2017).

This session featured the role and emerging evidence for rehabilitation in the context of HIV, aging, and multi-morbidity across both the life course and the HIV care cascade. To view the presentation click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uFbH5j6tXQ

CUHRRC Changes its Name to CIHRRC!
Posted on 2016-12-13

We are pleased to announce that the Canada-UK HIV and Rehabilitation Research Collaborative (CUHRRC) has changed its name to the Canada-International HIV Rehabilitation Research Collaborative (CIHRRC)

The Canada-International HIV and Rehabilitation Research Collaborative (CIHRRC) is an international research collaborative based in Canada that includes people living with HIV, researchers, clinicians, representatives from community-based HIV service organizations, and policy stakeholders with an interest in HIV and rehabilitation research.

History
This Collaborative was originally established in 2009 as a partnership among researchers, clinicians, community members and organizations in Canada and the United Kingdom (UK), originally referred to as the Canada-UK HIV and Rehabilitation Research collaborative (CUHRRC). Since inception, the Collaborative has expanded to include members from the United States, Ireland, and other countries whereby individuals living with HIV experience similar types of issues related to disability and rehabilitation.

Guiding Principles:
CIHRRC is based on the belief that forming partnerships and exchanging knowledge among countries with individuals experiencing similar types of disability related to HIV is an important step in bridging widespread clinical knowledge with a strong research foundation on HIV and rehabilitation.

CIHRRC aims to build on the enthusiasm of individual members to facilitate the advancement of research ideas and activities related to HIV and rehabilitation research.

CIHRRC also supports the GIPA principle (Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS) and MIPA principle (Meaningful Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS).

Strategic Directions – Research Priorities:
With direction from the CIHRRC Steering Committee, the CIHRRC membership will pursue a variety of research initiatives that address research priorities in HIV and rehabilitation originally identified by Realize (formerly the Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation (CWGHR))2 and updated by members of Realize / CWGHR and CIHRRC at the International Forum on HIV and Rehabilitation Research in June 2013.

The current research priorities in HIV and rehabilitation include:

    • Episodic health and disability
    • Aging with HIV across the life course
    • Concurrent health conditions
    • Access to rehabilitation and models of rehabilitation service delivery
    • Effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions
    • Enhancing outcome measurement in HIV and rehabilitation research

These priorities will be reviewed and updated regularly as new knowledge and priorities related to HIV and rehabilitation evolve internationally.
